Castellammare del Golfo

Formerly known as Emporium Segestanorum, over the centuries, it has had a great strategic and economic importance, as attested by its export activities (tuna, sumac and manna). The Arabs have left their mark on the history and traditions. The Castle, for example: built on a promontory to avoid attacks from the sea, over the centuries it has been subjected to many enlargements, starting from those made by the Normans. Today this imposing fortress is a Museum Complex. It is linked to the town through a stone bridge and it is surrounded by the sea. Its walls have been used to build fishermen’s houses, while the port and the port’s quay are located on the eastern side. Today, Castellammare features a series of narrow streets and staircases, which reveal a cultural path of great charm not only for its monuments, palaces and churches that embellish it, but also for its traditions, flavours and dialect expressions. The coasts of Castellammare offer visitors a range of emotions really indescribable: cliffs falling sheer into the sea are reflected in the crystal clear waters, inlets coloured with shades of blue and turquoise, a landscape characterised by a vegetation typical of hot places which extends the view to the sea. We are in the Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro (Zingaro Nature Reserve): a breathtaking place. Scopello is located in this corner of paradise: it’s an hamlet perched on a rock overlooking a splendid bay with stunning stacks. Its tonnara (tuna fishing factory) recalls a glorious past made of tuna fishing. Mount Inici rises steeply over the surrounding territory: it is characterised by an altitude of more than 1000 meters above sea level, a vast wooded area of more than 2000 hectares, with a rich patrimony of geological interest made of caves and ravines, as well as a rich flora and fauna.

San Vito lo Capo

San Vito Lo Capo lies between the sandy bay of Cape San Vito and Punta Solanto. This ancient fishing village seduces its visitors with crystal clear waters which lap its wonderful coastline. The town, built around the Saracen tower, is characterised by white houses revealing their Arab imprint and overlooking the sea. San Vito Lo Capo features a wonderful landscape, as well as a white sandy beach with Caribbean colours. But also the countless coves and bays inside the Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro (Zingaro Nature Reserve) make this area a small corner of paradise. Visitors can enjoy many activities, such as trekking, diving, climbing, horse riding, to name but a few. Underwater itineraries, sheer cliff faces ideal for climbing, mountains and wild landscapes, a countryside rich in colours, sun and perfumes and breathtaking views ranging from the gulf of Cofano to San Vito and Castellammare. Custonaci

Custonaci, also called “the city of marble, has a vast marble quarrying area stretching from Mount Sparagio to Mount Cofano and Mount Palatimone. It is located on a hill at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level: on the top of the hill lies the imposing Santuario of Maria Santissima of Custonaci (Sanctuary of the Most Holy Mary of Custonaci). Inside there is a painting depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary, object of great popular devotion. This oil painting, dating back to 1471 and attributable to the school of Antonello da Messina, depicts the Virgin breast-feeding the Child. In the last week of August the feast in Her honour is held: a procession by sea makes it really evocative and unique. A multitude of boats accompany the painting until the landing, in the beautiful setting of the Bay of Cornino. Connected to the beautiful Riserva Naturale di Monte Cofano (Mount Cofano Nature Reserve), the territory of Custonaci features numerous caves, interesting both speleologically (such as the o ne called “Cufuni”, with stalactites and stalagmites) and archaeologically (such as the one called “Mangiapane”, inhabited by humans since the Upper Paleolithic and today used, during the Christmas period, as a natural backdrop in the event called “Living Crib of Custonaci). At the foot of Mount Cofano, between a golden sandy beach and rocks with irregular outlines, stands the bay of Cornino, a renowned holiday place, with crystal clear waters and seabeds rich in fauna and flora. A real paradise for snorkelers and divers.

Valderice

Valderice, situated on a hill below mount Erice and immersed in a lush greenery, is surrounded by sinuous hills, crystal clear waters, vast wooded areas and unspoilt landscapes, which make it one of the most appreciated holiday resorts in the province of Trapani, especially in summer. It has several green areas, areas of great speleological and naturalistic interest, cliffs and beautiful beaches. Its numerous bagli (the typical Sicilian rural buildings with a spacious courtyard) and villas (some of which can be visited), are evidences of the ancient rural civilization. At the entrance of the town is located the Arco del Cavaliere, recently restored: here, during the procession of the Madonna di Custonaci, faithfuls stopped before resuming their journey towards Erice (as reported in old documents dating back to the 16th century). The Molino (Mill) Excelsior, in the center of the town, is a clear example of industrial archaeology: it was a mill, used for grinding wheat, active until the 1960s: today it is the seat of important cultural and wine and food exhibitions. Furthermore, the seventeenth-century Tonnara (Tuna-fishing factory) of Bonagia, with its tower, worth a visit. It was part of the coastal defensive system and today it hosts the Museo della Tonnara (Tunny Factory Museum), that preserves boats, tools and nets used for tuna fishing, as well as other tools linked to the “mattanza (the traditional way in which tuna fishing was conducted)”.

Erice

Erice is an ancient Medieval village, one of the most beautiful in Italy. It is more than three thousands years old and it’s a place rich in history, myths and legends. The historical buildings, among them the church of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist), the church of San Giuliano (St. Julian), the church of San Martino (St.  artin) and the Matrice (Main Church), are of great artistic value, as well as its urban layout: from the charming Cyclopean walls to the stone paved streets. The Norman Castle arises majestically: it hides old stories linked to the cult of the goddess Venus and, in recent years, various stories of ghosts. A little further on, in a silent atmosphere complemented by breathtaking views (ranging from the saltpans of Trapani to the sinuous slopes of the Agro Ericino), visitors can admire the beautiful garden of the Balio. Erice also seduces its visitors thanks to its artisan workshops, which expose typical handicraft products: from the hand-painted pottery to the colourful rugs. Visitors cannot leave Erice without first sampling its typical sweets, such as the “genovese”, a pastry sweets stuffed with cream and covered with powdered sugar, the “mustazzoli”, spiced biscuits with a crunchy consistency, the almond sweets or sipping a glass of native wine.

Buseto Palizzolo

The territory of Buseto Palizzolo is situated between the archaeological area of Segesta and Mount Erice and it features a wonderful bucolic landscape. It had its origins in the 11th century before Christ with the Elymians, an ancient people who inhabited these lovely lands and who have left their traces until the present day (the place called Pietra Colli is an important archaeological site). Then followed several dominations that have left different cultural signs (some hamlets and districts have Greek names). The Arabs introduced the cultivation of citrus fruits, as well as the cultivation of cotton, palms and mulberry trees. With Normans, thanks to whom Erice reassumed its strategic role, the Agro Ericino territory was transformed into “fiefs”, and these into “parecchiate (smaller parcels of land)”: within them the “bagli” were born. They would have become the typical Sicilian rural buildings, fortified and with spacious courtyards, inhabited both owners and peasants.
Also known as “the city of mushroom”, Buseto Palizzolo has a vast wooded area, the Bosco of Scorace: 750 hectares of unspoilt nature recalling ancient landscape elements, when the surrounding hills and mountains were covered with woods. Inside there are many varieties of mushrooms (both edible and non-edible). In order to facilitate their knowledge (mushroom picking is recommended for experts only), the State Forestry Corps has marked the various trails with signs. Those who are less expert can taste, especially in autumn, delicious dishes based on mushrooms at the nearby restaurants.
